Between These Sacred Texts

The Qur’an – a sacred text, divinely preserved. Meant to guide us – with messages that serves as both warnings and reminders.

It is one of Rasulullah ﷺ ‘s best miracle.

The revelation of God revealed to our Prophet ﷺ over a period of 23 years in Arabic through Angel Jibriel A.S.

In Ustaz’s class, I learned about the sciences of the Quran. Where the source of the Quran comes from.

How was it preserved from the Prophet’s to the Sahabah and Caliphates’ time. (May Allah reward our teacher abundantly for his dedication and contributions in guiding and teaching us)

In Surah Yaseen, it says, ‘And We did not give him (i.e., Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur’an.’ (36:69)

There was also the story of Zaid ibn Thabit R.A., who was the personal scribe to the Prophet ﷺ and later he served as the chief recorder of the Quranic text when the Prophet ﷺ passed on.

His story reminded me how the sacred text we read with ease today comes with immense struggle. Many of the Sahabah (companions) have undergone tireless struggles, effort and deep commitment to honour the duty of preserving the Qur’an. And who was it for? – It was for the Ummah of Rasulullah ﷺ.

It was for Us.

So then, how can we not be grateful?

With these pieces of information, I carry them with me to remind myself of how the Qur’an is far more than just words on the page. They are sacred text, divinely preserved, each carry an intended message.

From the beginning chapter, Al-Fatihah (The Opening) to the last chapter, Surah An-Nas (Mankind), every chapter carries a message meant to reach us with its own wisdom and its own time. ‘Except as a mercy for Us, and provision for a time.’ (36:44)

Thank you, Allah, for guiding my heart to even read these texts.

Every senses – from our sense of sight (to see the verse), hearing (to listen to the recitation), speech (to read the verses), hands (to write), the intellect (to understand), and the heart to humble itself to yearn for guidance, all comes from Him alone.

As a new convert, understanding the meaning is as important as reading.

There’s so much to unpack in these 114 chapters. And I have only just started. What wisdom can we extract from these verses?

What is the message we can take home? And how can we apply it in our lives?

I implore you to take time out to rediscover the Qur’an. To be intentional when we read the verses. And may Allah SWT guide us to the Straight Path, make us among the humble seekers of knowledge and for the Qur’an to be the lights of our hearts and companion in the Hereafter.

One of the verses that stood out for me marvelled about the magnificent wonderous signs of Nature and Provisions –

‘Behold! In the creation of the heavens and earth; in the alternation of the night and the day; in the sailing of the ships through the ocean for the profit of mankind; in the rain which Allah sends down from the skies, and the life which He gives therewith to an earth that is dear; in the breast of all kinds that He scatters though the earth; In the change of the winds, and the clouds which they trail like their slaves between the sky and the earth – (here) Indeed are Signs for a people.’ (2:164)

Subhan Allah. Did we not see that He is the one who provides sustenance? How generous (Al-Kareem) is He, our Provider (Ar-Razzaq). Among his wondrous signs is the unity of design in the wildest diversity of Nature.

As a nature lover, I could spend hours gazing at the sky, breathing in the fresh, open air, surrounded by greenery, listening to the soothing sounds of waves, and admiring the towering mountains rising beyond the horizon.

As the verse says – in the alternation of night and the day; how amazing it is that ‘the sun does not reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, each in an orbit, is swimming.’ (36:40)

And He mentioned – ‘in the breast of all kinds that He scatters through the earth’. He talks about all moving creatures, His creations (Us included), regardless of shape, colour and sizes.

He knows and He sustains. He knows who we are, the decisions we are going to make. Our living and the end of time.

The four things that Allah has decreed for us includes – Time of Death, Deeds (the good and bad), our livelihood and whether we will be blessed or wretched (in religion). (Sahih al-Bukhari 3208)

May Allah protect us and guide us.

And these are the signs for Us to ponder. For everything around and within us points back to the unity of purpose and design – Allah.

All Praises be to Him, our Creator – the One who help and sustain me every day, from this Life (Haya) to Faith (Iman), Knowledge (Ilm), Will, Power, and Senses of Hearing, Seeing and Speech.

Thank You Allah.

To the one reading this, thank you for taking time to read my reflection. All
shortcomings are from me, and all Mercy is from Allah.

May Peace and Blessings be upon You, and upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and companions.
