وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ • إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ

“Nor does he speak from [his own] desire. It is not but a revelation revealed.”

Quran 53:3 – 4

The above verses affirm that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ does not speak from his whims or opinions. His speech regarding religion is guided by divine revelation.

The Holy Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are the spiritual pillars of Islam.

The Holy Quran is the Kalam of Allah, while our beloved Prophet ﷺ is its living embodiment.

The Holy Quran and the life of our Prophet ﷺ is not just a guiding light, but it is also a model of mercy, patience, justice and unwavering faith.

The Holy Quran is the word of Allahﷺ revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Angel Gabriel over twenty-three years; the Quranic verses were not merely verses about Islam.

Rather, they were also divine inspirations during some of the most trying periods of the Prophet ﷺ’s life. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ’s wife Aisha (may Allahﷺ be pleased with her) said, “His character was the Quran.”

From this, we can learn that the Holy Quran is not just a sacred book to be read beautifully, but it is knowledge to be internalised and acted upon.

Our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us how to be merciful and compassionate towards everyone, and how to remain patient in times of difficulty in life.

Through this, we can understand that the Holy Quran is indeed a way of life for all of us. One example that is close to the heart from the Holy Quran is this beautiful supplication:

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.”

Quran, 7:23

Similarly, the Quran is filled with numerous supplications meant to be a guide for us to turn to and communicate with the All-Hearing, Allahﷺ whenever we want to. There is a significant verse in the Quran pertaining to Believing in One God and His Messenger:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَىٰكُمْ

“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allah knows of your movement and your resting place.”

Quran, 47:19

This shows us that Tawhid – Oneness of Allahﷺ is the foundational knowledge incumbent upon every Muslim.

In our fast-paced world, where the Quran can sometimes become just another book on the shelf rather than a divine light in our hearts, our beloved Prophet ﷺ’s life is the lens through which we best understand its message—its hope, its discipline, its beauty.

May we strive to read the Quran with the Prophet ﷺ’s heart—to listen as he listened, to act as he acted, and to love as he loved. Ameen Ameen Ya Rabbal Aalameen.

Facts about the quran:

  • The Holy Quran has 114 chapters and 6236 verses.
  • There are 77430 words in the Holy Quran with 5277 repetitive words.
  • There are 30 Juz in the Holy Quran. Each Juz consists of around 20 pages
  • Each Juz has 2 hizb.
  • Every Hizb has 4 Rubu’
  • For Example:
  • If one would like to Khatam the Quran in 1 month – Recite 1 Juz per day
  • If one would like to Khatam the Quran in 2 months – Recite 1 Hizb per day
  • If one recites 1 Rubu’ per day, can Khatam the Quran in 240 days ( i.e. once a year)

Based on the Hadith below, Narrated Aws ibn Hudhayfah:

We came upon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in a deputation of Thaqif. The signatories of the pact came to al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah as his guests. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made Banu-Malik stay in a tent of his.

Musaddad’s version says: He was in the deputation of Thaqif which came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He used to visit and have a talk with us every day after the night prayer.

The version of Abu Sa’id says: He remained standing for such a long time (talking to us) that he put his weight sometimes on one leg and sometimes on the other due to his long stay. He mostly told us how his people, the Quraysh, behaved with him.

He would say: We were not equal; we were weak and degraded at Mecca (according to Musaddad’s version). When we came over to Medina the fighting began between us; sometimes we overcome them and at other times they overcome us. One night he came late and did not come at the time he used to come.

We asked him: You came late tonight? He said: I could not recite the fixed part of the Qur’an that I used to recite every day. I disliked to come till I had completed it.

Aws said: I asked the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): How do you divide the Qur’an for daily recitation? They said: Three surahs, five surahs, seven surahs, Nine surahs, eleven surahs, thirteen surahs, mufassal surahs.

Abu Dawud said: The version of Abu Sa’id is complete. Sunan Abi Dawud 1393

The Quran can be sub-divided into 7 parts which gives us an idea on how we can portion our daily recitation of the quran or how can the quran be khatam.

The 7 parts are as follows:

  1. Al-Baqarah to An-Nisa ( Three Surahs)
  2. Al-Maidah to At-Taubah ( Five Surahs)
  3. Yunus to An-Nahl ( Seven Surahs)
  4. Al-Isra to Al-Furqan (Nine Surahs)
  5. Ash-Shuara to Ya Sin ( Eleven Surahs)
  6. As-Saffat to Al-Hujurat (Thirteen Surahs)
  7. Qaf to Al-Nas (Mufassal)

Virtues of often recited Surahs:

The heart of the Quran is Surah Yasin.

  • A thousand years before the creation of the heavens and the earth, when this Surah was recited to the Angels, they said May the Ummah which receive this Surah be blessed, three times.
  • Surah Yasin intercedes for the one who recites it and when a person listens to the recitation of Surah Yasin his sins will be forgiven as well.
  • If one recites Surah Yasin, Allahﷺ grants the person the virtue of reciting the Quran 10 times.
  • If this Surah is recited for one who has passed away, his sins will be forgiven.

Surah Al-Kahf:

  • When one recites Surah Al-Kahf, the heart is filled with Noor (light).
  • If one is afflicted with difficulty, he/she should recite this Surah after Jumuah prayers and make dua to Allahﷺ.
  • Allahﷺ grants forgiveness to the reciter, if he/she should recite this Surah on the night of Friday.
  • One should recite this surah every day as it helps in settling debts, honours them and also increases them in knowledge.

Surah Al Fath:

  • This Surah is more beloved to Prophet Muhammadﷺ’, than this whole world and everything that is in it.
  • When one recites this Surah, it is as if he has taken part in the conquest of Makkah with the Prophet ﷺ. SubhanAllah.
  • When one recites this Surah on the first night of Ramadhan, Allahﷺ’s protection and help is always with them.

Surah Al-Waqiah:

Reciting Surah Al-Waqiah every night protects one from poverty.

Surah Al- Mulk:

  • This Surah will intercede for the person who recites it till all his sins are forgiven, protects one from the punishment of the grave.
  • Our Beloved Prophet ﷺ saw dis not go to sleep at night without reciting this Surah.
