Lament of the Unworthy Heart

What is this feeling deep within me?

It arrives without invitation,

entering the heart, stirring everything,

and leaving a beautiful mess in its wake.

The knowledge and recognition of The Most Noble Beloved

have plunged me into a state of agony.

At the mere mention of Him,

my eyes flood and my heart burns.

Oh, dear heart, I am sorry

I cannot explain why this is happening…

oh, this quiet grief.

This grief and pain, like love itself,

I both avoid and welcome in the same breath.

Perhaps I love this grief and pain

because it reminds my heart of its longing for You.

Perhaps I turn to sin

to shield myself from this feeling,

for such longing is almost too much to bear.

Oh, ungrateful soul…

even as it complains,

in truth this is the only way I can express

my yearning and love for You.

Precious things are meant to be hidden,

yet pearls keep flowing from these eyes.

Forgive this sinner,

who has no control over a heart

tormented by love for Him.

Ya Habibullah, this vessel is unworthy of Your Light

but time grows short, and I grow desperate

with hopes of meeting You.

May the Lord grant peace everlasting upon You,

Oh the Most Noble of Creation.
