How Much Do I Actually Know You?

Assalamualaikum Ya Rasulullah ﷺ, I don’t really know how to begin writing this letter.

Maybe it’s because I’m still learning about you. I have heard your name in prayers, I have sent selawat upon you, and I have heard stories about you since I was young. I knew that you were the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

But recently, I found myself thinking…

How much do I actually know you?

I realised that knowing your name and truly knowing who you were are two very different things.

So I started watching animated films and stories about your life.

At first, I thought I was simply learning more about your story. But as I continued watching, there were little moments that stayed with me and made me think about who you really were as a person.

I learned that you experienced so much loss from such a young age. You grew up without your parents beside you, and I can’t imagine how that must have felt.

But despite everything you went through, you still had such a soft heart.

You cared when you saw other people suffering. When people around you fought, it troubled you. You could have easily only thought about your own struggles, but you didn’t.

You still cared about the pain of others.

And that really made me think about myself.

Sometimes when I am going through something, it is so easy to get caught up in my own feelings that I forget that the person beside me might be struggling too.

But you went through your own pain, and somehow, your heart still had room for other people. I think that is one of the first things I am beginning to love about you.

Your kindness wasn’t there because life had always been kind to you. You were kind even after experiencing hardship yourself.

I still have so much more to learn about you, Ya Rasulullah ﷺ.

But maybe, through learning about your life, I will slowly learn how to soften my own heart too.
