The retreat at Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang was such a special experience for me. From the first night till the end, I felt like Allah was slowly opening my heart to Him.
On the first night, we started with remembrance of Allah (zikr), and it made me feel really calm. Ustaz then taught us about Solat Istikharah, which is a prayer of seeking Allah SWT’s counsel.
I always thought it was only for big decisions, but he explained that it can be for anything in life when we need Allah SWT’s guidance. The class felt so peaceful, and there was even a soft breeze that made it more beautiful.
At night, the sisters slept in the prayer hall and the brothers outside. Sleeping in the masjid felt different, like we were there just for Allah SWT’s sake, it felt safe and cozy.

One of the best parts was waking up for qiyam (night prayers). We prayed Solat Tahajjud, Taubah, Shukur, and Hajat.
Each one had its own meaning, like Solat Taubah for seeking forgiveness, Shukur for being grateful for health, food, and family.
Praying in the quiet night with the wind around us made me feel so close to Allah.
After Fajr, Ustaz taught us about “La ilaha illallah.” He said it’s not just words, but a way of life, only Allah SWT deserves our hearts. That really stayed with me.
Later, after Zuhor and Asar, we went to the beach for zikr and qasidah. The sound of the waves mixed with our voices, and it felt like nature itself was remembering Allah SWT with us.
It reminded me of how the Quran says everything praises Allah, even if we can’t hear it.
From this retreat, I learnt so much: worship needs discipline, but Allah SWT gives us strength when we try; praying together feels powerful; solat istikharah is for all decisions, not just big ones; and “La ilaha illallah” is something we should live by every day.
For me, this retreat was like pressing a reset on my heart. The peace, the lessons, and the prayers will stay with me, and I hope I can keep these good habits going, InshaAllah.
